Online retail sales rise

A recent report has been released with figures which reveal that online retail sales increased overall by 22 per cent in May - the strongest monthly growth in the sector since June 2008!

UK shoppers spent over £4.5 billion on the internet in May (according to marketing magazine) – this is the equivalent of £73 spent per person in the UK!

Areas with the strongest growth occurred in clothing and alcohol which rose by 32% and 23% respectively.

Interactive Media Retail Group director of information, Tina Spooner, stated: "With online sales growing at their highest rate in almost two years, this is good news for the e-retail industry. The fine weather in May, together with the build-up to the World Cup, appears to have had a positive impact for e-retailers."

With more and more customers expected to abandon the high streets in favor of convenience and greater discounts available online, the online retail sector is predicted to expand by almost 20% in 2010 across Europe.
