Yahoo! Scores Deal With The Premier League!

This week, Yahoo! has scored (pun intended) an exclusive media rights deal with the Barclays Premier League which allows them to feature online highlights of the football matches over the next three seasons. The company's chief executive Carol Bartz made the announcement during a UK press conference in London this week – her first since she took office in January 2009.

She revealed that Yahoo! Had beaten companies including Virgin (the currents rights holder) to screen five-minute highlight videos of matches from the Premier League for the next three seasons and that Yahoo! also holds the rights to distribute their content to other media providers.

By securing these internet rights to Premier League matches and beating off other major companies, such as Virgin; Yahoo! has achieved a well sought-after position at the centre of the online football world in the UK.

This development will also allow the company to construct new advertising packages when the content is distributed to other companies.

Rich Riley, European Managing Director for Yahoo!, said: "The acquisition of Premier League rights shows how serious Yahoo! is about providing the best in video content for our both our users and advertisers.”

"Sport is a passion for our target audiences and the Premier League rights are a key part of our efforts to build on Yahoo!'s reputation for engaging, original content."

With their recent search partnership with Microsoft, the increase in advertising spends and now this, Yahoo! looks set to have a more profitable year in 2010.
